LATEST REVIEW The Unbuttoned Album features in Earle Hitchner's Top 10 Irish Traditional Albums of 2007 in New York. Published in CEOL, on January 23, 2008, in the IRISH ECHO newspaper, New York City. Copyright (c) Earle Hitchner. Number(6) "UNBUTTONED" by Tommie Cunniffe "Last year was an especially good one for players of free-reed instruments. For further confirmation, listen to "Unbuttoned," the first solo recording of Roscommon-born, Cork resident button accordionist Tommie Cunniffe. Aptly titled, it's unbuttoned in energy, drive, lift, and flow from a thinking man's box player, whose verve, virtuosity, and risk-taking recall similar qualities in the accordion work of Joe Derrane and Dermot Byrne. Three medleys of reels showcase Cunniffe at his peak: "The Land of Sunshine/Larry Redican's/Torrid Romance," "56 Westbury/Making Tracks," and "Sync Reel/Bucklepper." Those last four reels also reveal his gift for composition. Unequivocally, "Unbuttoned" is the self-issued debut of a potentially major talent on the two-row button box". (Earle Hitchner) |
